After water, tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, and registered dietitians say drinking one cup a day can deliver real health perks. Jenna Volpe, a registered dietitian and herbalist, says that “every type of tea is unique in terms of its nutritional profile and what it provides.” Traditional varieties like black, green, white, and oolong all come from the Camellia sinensis plant, but green and white teas stand out for their antioxidant levels. In particular, green and white teas are rich in EGCG, a compound linked to anti-inflammatory and heart-supporting properties. “For most people, drinking antioxidant-rich tea everyday can potentially help to reduce inflammation, slow down cellular aging, reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, and more,” according to Volpe, RDN. Still, what you add matters. Volpe notes that adding sweeteners to tea will negate some of the benefits as “tea is anti-inflammatory but sugar is pro-inflammatory.” As a general guideline, Volpe suggests that drinking one to four cups of tea daily is safe and beneficial for most healthy adults.
